New York State
"Capitol Destroyed by Fire March 29, 1911" It was the New York State Capitol in Albany, in case you were wondering. I got this on Ebay, it's listed in Yesterday's Elongateds on page 88. (yawn, I should do some research about it... ahh fergettit.)
"West Point NY" OUr friend Miki Halpin sends me coins from time to time. She never sends a note or anything, just a package with a coin, no explanation, no nothing. For all I know, she's enrolled here, heck this might be her picture right her on the penny. Good luck Miki, thanks for the coin, and I'm glad you didn't choose the Citadel.
Brady's aunt Diane, a lifelong New Yorker, went to Jones Beach for a weekend getaway sometime during the Spring of 2001. I don't know what she did there, but she did bring back a couple of pennies.
So, generally speaking I try to take about 2 seconds writing each of these penny descriptions and the one I just wrote about Jones Beach stunk so much that I had to look it up on the web, so here's a good description of Jones Beach from the Long Island History website.
"I Love You - Lake Placid" I know the Winter Olympics were there (I remember watching them on TV, Eric Heiden right?) and it's someplace in upstate New York, but that's all I know.
"Lake Placid - New York" It shows a ski jumper. As we've discussed before, Lake Placid hosted the 1980 Winter Olympics and I'm sure you'll remember that the K120 individual Ski Jump was won by Jourko Törmänen. Tom Noel knows this, he sent me this penny.
"Lake Placid Welcomes the World" This penny is exactly like one I have from Seattle, and I thought that that one came from the Seattle Worlds Fair. It turns out that it didn't, so I don't think this one is from the Olympics, which was at Lake Placid in 1980.
"Lake Placid" with a howling wolf. This is another kind of boring recycled design from the Pennymen. Yawn. I have nothing to say. It's tough to write a humorous anecdote about a recycled design on a coin that someone sent to me. I'm sorry, but I don't think I'm going to accept any more coins from people, I owe it to you, to save you from pointless blather like this.
