Hawaii
Wherever there's a penny smasher, I'll be there. Wherever there are coins to be elongated, I'll be there. Wherever there's a mildly interesting tourist destination, I'll be there, too.
It's tiny, but it says, "World's Largest Maze - Dole Plantation Hawaii" Lousise, Bill and Christopher went to Hawaii and brought this penny back for me. They didn't say whether they went into the maze or whether it was huge or anything about it. Should I trust the tiny writing on a penny?
"Pineapple Express - Dole Plantation Hawaii" How come evrybody who goes to Hawaii has to go to the Dole Plantation? Maybe they don't but it seems like they do. One of these day, I'm going to Hawaii myself and I'm going to the Dole Plantation. You can bet on that alright.
"Hilo Hatties - Ala Moana Shopping Center" Hey when you go to Hawaii, I guess you kind of get burned out on the beautiful blue ocean and the volcanoes, and the waterfalls and the hula dancers and all that. Sooner or later your old habits like hanging out at the mall will crop up and you'll find yourself in front of this penny machine. Yup, you will.
Despite my best efforts, people still send me coins. Marian Stoffan sent me some coins from the Pearl Harbor Naval Exchange Food Court. I guess these are not readily available to the public, but I don't know. Thanks marian!
"King Kamehameha - Hawaii" Marian Stoffan, a collector in Oakland, sent me this coin. I recognize the statue as the one in front of the state capitol. Thoug I could be wrong.
"Pearl Harbor - United States Navy - Hawaii" Louise, Bill, and Christopher brought me this one. There must be a lot of penny machines in Hawaii.
"Waikiki" Is everyone required to wear a grass skirt at one time or another? I don't think you have to go to Hawaii to do it, but it helps. Ok.. now I'm rambling. I think I should just stop collecting these coins. Or at least stop documenting my collection here. This may be it for good. Gee Whiz, I've been doing it for 10 years. ok, maybe not quite 10 years.
"I love you Waikiki" Yeah yeah, everybody loves Waikiki. I think, I do't know. Some people come back from Hawaii and tell me it sucks. Apparently there are many places to go in Hawaii that are quite different from each other. They even have separate islands and stuff... with water around them.
"Dole Plantation Hawaii" This one shows a man, I guess it's Mr. Dole, standing in a field, looking at a pineapple. Off in the distance is a building that looks like a factory, not like a planation house. And nowhere are there any workers. Super-contributor Stephanie Vardavas sent this to me, but she didn't tell me anything about the Dole Plantation, if you know anything, let me know. Update! a couple of people have written to me about this penny!
"Dole Plantation Hawaii" This looks like the entrance to the Visitors' Center. There are two giant pineapples on either side of the door. I recently read somewhere that pineapples weren't native to Hawaii, and it turns out that it's true. Thanks for sending this penny to me Vard!
"Northshore Hawaii" I've never been to Hawaii, I don't really know anything about Hawaii, I've heard of all the places, the islands, the beaches, but I have no image of what they're like. I do know that they surf in Hawaii and I guess they surf the Norrthshore. I know there's a new postage stamp with a surfer on it, because I've seen it.
Margaret Kranyak sent me this one back from Hawaii. It says "Byodo-In Temple - Hawaii - May Peace Prevail On Earth" It shows the temple with a mountain in back. I have no idea where or what this place is, or why they have a penny machine there. If you know, let me know! Update! a couple of people have written to me about this penny!
Fawn goes to Hawaii regularly... well, I don't know if its regularly, but it's more often I do. Come to think of it, I've never been there. Anyway, she brought this one back the last time she went. It says "Matsumoto's Shave Ice Haleiwa Hawaii".
"Maui Tropical Plantation" depicting the bounty of the island! I can see a pineapple and some bananas and a bunch of indistinguishable round, cylindrical, and, no doubt, tasty objects. The fabulous Crannif Superfest brought this one back to me.
The Neighbors (Kate, Peter, Astrid, Cooper and Dashiell) strike again! this one says "Aloha from Hawaii" and shows a hula girl, the islands themselves and a person either blowing into a conch shell or kissing a turtle...I'm not sure which. Thanks Neighbors!
They went to Hawaii to check out the University, (Astrid is starting college next year). I don't know if she's decided to go there, but I'm glad she went to check it out. This penny reads "Hawaii" and has a big ol' hula girl saluting the word. Alright!
I got this one at the Alemany Flea Market in San Francisco. It shows the U.S.S Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and has a bunch of details on it. Anybody know if this one is still available at the memorial? Let me know
Update: Some people wrote to me with some info!
"Maui - The Valley Isle" My friend Marshall brought this back from his recent trip to Hawaii. He picked this baby up somewhere in the airport. Happy Hunting!
