FLYNN'S Guide to San Francisco's Neighborhood Bars

Philosophers Club

You may not find Kant or Kierkegaard belching out theories on the existence of humankind over a draft Bud here, but you will find a nice cozy neighborhood environment.

Wednesday is an off night from the active participation in the Sunset Pool League which gave bartender Colleen time to talk to us about the 60 year old bar. Built in 1936 (see photo above register), this casual thinker's haven has been under the same ownership for 39 years. Despite fading and warping, the characature drawings of the regulars from the 1970's still adorn the back wall, a few of whom apparently still drop by. Colleen seemed very knowledgeable about the neighborhood bar scene and made a mean margarita. If you want to know who your bartender is, just look for the nameplate over the cash register.

Pool is big here or you can try your hand at the Circus triple play machine, a more modern T2 pinball machine, or have a stab at the grab the stuffed animal gizmo. The "His" and "Hers" bathroom signs complete the homey feel. This is a great bar for a drink after a movie at the Empire or on your way back from shopping at Stonestown.

Flynn gives this one three jiggers.
