FLYNN'S Guide to San Francisco's Neighborhood Bars

Max's 540 Club
540 Clement
Richmond

This place, housed in an old bank, used to be the darkest spot on Clement to have yourself a draft glass of Hamm's. Burlap sacks lined the low ceiling, at least we think they were burlap sacks, the place was to dank to tell just exactly what they were. That's what we were looking for on a rainy Wednesday night, a dark damp place where we could molder away.

"That was when Rosie owned the place," says Suzie, the former patron turned barkeep, "You couldn't see what you were drinking." Now that low ceiling is flickering with rows of tiny white lights, the burlap is gone (except for a few shards still tacked up here and there), and don't look for a glass of Hamm's.

Suzie, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday nights, was a great host, serving up her past, present, and future favorite ("gotta be topshelf") drinks to three thirsty travellers. The "Smallest Pool Table in the World" is in the back in what was once the vault. They can't knock the walls out to fit a bigger one. Be sure to warm up at the plastic light-up fireplace logs right below the classic "drunk on a lamppost" painting above the mantle.

Flynn gives this one four jiggers.
