FLYNN'S Guide to San Francisco's Neighborhood Bars

Charlie's Club
309 Cortland
Bernal Heights

This little bar was another hangout for Flynn's hero, H.F. Vick (see review for Skips Tavern), who often swapped the talents of his brush for drinks. Just as you walk in the door you will see a Vick original from 1946 showing a woman plowing a field with an ox while a german tank looms behind her. Charlie has owned this charmer for two years and has replaced the girlie posters from the walls with original Fillmore Auditorium postcards. The ceiling is plastered in cardboard record covers. You will find everything from Webb Pierce to the Go Go's with an emphasis on the 70s. Our bartender was very friendly and apparently new to the profession. Flynn's first clue was the copy of Mr. Boston's Bartender Guide she was reading behind the bar. When asked how long she had been working there, she replied "since Tuesday."

Flynn still gives this one four jiggers.
